How to Spot AI Slop

Nick Grinberg on why low-quality AI content is easy to recognise

AdNews has explored the growing wave of “AI slop” – low-quality, synthetic content flooding feeds and search results. Among the industry voices weighing in, Next&Co’s Head of Strategy, Nick Grinberg, explains why this type of content is instantly recognisable to anyone who spends time online.

Nick says the biggest giveaway is AI’s inability to mirror culture authentically. “You see it… and know what it is almost straight away,” he says. “AI slop often lags real culture. It references tropes or memes in an inauthentic manner and just ends up looking and feeling awkward.”

While Nick acknowledges that AI can be a powerful tool in the right hands, he cautions that over-reliance flattens a brand’s distinct voice. “Not all AI content is slop – it can be a supercharger. But if a brand leans too hard into churning out AI content, it risks flattening its own personality.”
He believes the industry may soon move toward proving when content has been created by humans. Publishers and brands able to demonstrate “human origin” could ultimately command more trust, more attention, and stronger long-term engagement.
