John Vlasakakis, co-founder and head of SEO at the digital marketing agency Next&Co, said many businesses would have to adapt their websites if they wanted to get into AI overview.
“The fact that it’s not coming to Australia first is a good thing because we’ll have time to see how it’s actually going to work,” he said.
Mr Vlasakakis said Google would probably continue with the “hybrid” approach to search results it was already using in the United States, with AI results appearing together with traditional search results.
“It’s very hard to change search behaviour that people have had ingrained in them for well over two decades now,” he said.
“In the short term, AI overview is just an additional lever that Google’s going to make a lot of money from, but brands that learn how to master the tactics behind AI-driven advertising also stand to make money.”
